Vrede en Lust Estate
Nestled within a natural amphitheatre shaped by the vertical cliffs of the spectacular Simonsberg Mountain, lies Vrede en Lust Estate – home to the wines produced and bottled by the Buys-family. The history of Vrede en Lust Estate is a story of passion, vision and resurrection, which goes as far back as 1688, when Flemish merchant Jacques de Savoye arrived at the Cape with the French Huguenots. De Savoye immediately started improving the 60 morgen (55Ha) of land that starts at the Bergriver valley floor and runs up the eastern foothills of the majestic Simonsberg Mountain. More than 10 000 vines were planted by 1691, which grew to 80 000 by 1780. Since the De Savoye reign, Vrede en Lust Estate has changed hands a number of times and in 1996, when the Buys family became the 17th owners, they embarked on a programme of renewal to fully realise the exceptional winemaking potential of the land. Today this breathtakingly modern wine farm, a family owned and managed wine business, is a tribute to its noble roots and continues to build on over 335 years of history and heritage. Jacques De Savoye named the farm Vrede en Lust in 1688 derived from the Dutch meaning of ‘Peace and Delight’.

Kleinood
Kleinood is a small farm with just twelve hectares of arable land. Of these, ten hectares are devoted to vines, with the remaining two under olive trees. The rest of the farm is left wild or planted with fynbos, roses and vegetables. Everything on and about Kleinood is rooted in the history of our family as well as in the Cape and the Boland, because we believe that it is important to belong, to have a heritage and to take care of the things that came before us and that put us here. Naming something is giving it an identity of its own in terms of its origin and the world in which it has to find its way. De Villiers families have left deep footprints in the history of the South African wine industry through the centuries. Tamboerskloof wines from Kleinood are no exception.

Oak Valley
Oak Valley Estate was founded in 1898 by Sir Antonie Viljoen, a medical doctor who graduated from Edinburgh University in Scotland. Sir Antonie became a Senator in the Cape Parliament and was knighted by King George in 1916 for his efforts to reconcile the Boers and Brits in the bitter aftermath of the Boer War. Sir Antonie was a farmer extraordinaire and amongst his many farming achievements was the establishment of the first commercial apple orchards in the Elgin Valley. The apple industry remains the economic backbone of the region today. Well over a century has passed since the pioneering accomplishments of Sir Antonie and today Oak Valley lies in the heart of the Elgin Valley, renowned for its apples and pears, its greenhouse cut-flowers, and, for the production of its outstanding cool climate wines. Our wines are defined by the impact of the Groenlandberg on our vineyard sites. Stylistically, the wines reflect our cool climate, defined by freshness, persistence and purity of fruit, elegance and delicacy in structure. They will last and gain complexity with age. We focus almost exclusively on Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Stellenzicht Wines
We nurture the vast, micro-climate soil pockets of Stellenzicht to steward and sustain what nature provides each year. Our wines truly are expressions of our terroir. The first owner of Stellenzicht in 1692 created a legacy of over 300 years of winemaking excellence. Since its revival in 2017, Stellenzicht has honoured its legacy by continuing to allow its ancient soil to produce its distinct terroir-driven wines which appeals to both the old-school wine lovers and those who enjoy the more New World style.

Morgenster
Our family estate, Morgenster, lies in the heart of the Helderberg, on the foothills of the mountains where eagles carve through the sky and owls roost in trees close to the Manor House. It’s the setting of our Bertrand family story. “Every good story starts with a great protagonist.” Long ago, an Italian man fell in love with South Africa and the Cape Winelands. In 1992, he retired from his textile career, moved to South Africa, and bought Morgenster – a farm with a rich history that dates back 300 years. That was Giulio Bertrand, our founder, father and grandfather. “Where there is quality, there is no compromise”. Armed with this motto, Giulio set out to create excellence – world class Bordeaux-style wines and the highest quality extra virgin olive oils that South Africa had ever seen. Morgenster’s soil and proximity to the ocean made it the perfect spot for both of these to flourish. He called in the help of world-renowned Pierre Lurton of Château Cheval Blanc and Château d’Yquem in Bordeaux to perfect the wine. Then, in partnership with the Olive Oil Institute in Perugia, he imported 17 specially selected olive varieties. From there, he paved the way for South Africa’s olive oil culture as we know it today. While it is part of Italian culture to produce fine wines and olives together, the concept was an innovation in South Africa at that time. Today, it’s mother and daughter team, Federica and Vittoria, that carry on the legacy of excellence that their father and grandfather started decades ago. With their inherited passion for wine and olive oil, they’re inspired to not only celebrate their farm’s history, but to push it into a new era of innovation. Our estate, it’s part of us.

Henry Kotzé

He understands in rich detail the potential of the land here and knows intimately how best to coax varietal expression from specific sites. That is valuable not only at Mulderbosch itself but also in working with Stellenbosch suppliers to us. Some of these growers are well-known to him and he values their ability to express his stylistic vision.
