“The more we care for the earth, the better our wine”
In February 2019, Familia Torres from Spain and Jackson Family Wines from California co-founded ‘International Wineries for Climate Action’ (IWCA) to tackle the world’s most defining environmental challenge and to create a cleaner, more resilient wine community for future generations.
Recently IWCA received the 2019 Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Award for Social Visionary of the Year.
The Wine Star Awards honor industry game-changers that have made outstanding achievements in the wine and alcohol beverage world. IWCA received this distinction for its visionary leadership to galvanize collaborative action within the global wine community to mitigate and reverse the impacts of climate change by decarbonizing the industry.
IWCA is a working group with a mission to take collective action to decarbonize the global wine industry, underscored with goals for member wineries to achieve a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and an 80% reduction by 2045.
Members must first establish a baseline carbon footprint across Scopes 1, 2 & 3 by conducting a third-party verified greenhouse gas emissions inventory.
IWCA is only open to wineries who recognize that climate change is the most significant threat to the wine community and is guided by the urgency for strategic action to accelerate innovative solutions.
The role of Familia Torres, the World’s most admired Wine Brand*
Since its founding in 1870, Familia Torres has combined tradition and innovation with the aim of making premium wine and brandy, always with the utmost respect for the environment. Familia Torres’s roots in Penedès, near Barcelona, go back more than three centuries –the earliest winegrowing references date back to 1678 –, it has historically had wineries and vineyards in Penedès, Conca de Barberà, Priorat and Costers del Segre.
The commitment to protect the land and environment, the pursuit of excellence, and a passion for wine culture has been passed down from generation to generation. Fourth-generation family member Miguel A. Torres pioneered the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon in Spain, creating the famous Mas La Plana in 1970.
For the fifth generation, the focus is on making wines from unique vineyards and recovering ancestral varieties in Catalonia, as well as in other parts of Spain and Chile. This project, “Torres and Earth”, not only restores a winegrowing heritage but could provide forward-looking solutions within a climate change context, given the heat and drought resistance of these varieties.
Familia Torres is a pioneer in adapting to global warming while contributing to the mitigation of its effects. It is reducing carbon emissions through the use of renewable energy, sustainable vehicles, and energy efficiency measures, among other initiatives.
The brand also has its own vineyards and wineries in leading Spanish wine regions – Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Rueda, and RíasBaixas – as well as in Chile and California.
Familia Torres is a member of Primum Familiae Vini, an association of 12 wine families who are among the most prestigious wine producers of Europe including Antinori, Hugel and the Symington Family.
