Most notably grown for blending with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the Bordeaux style but often produced into a bright, medium- bodied, peppery single varietal with aromas of tobacco, raspberry, bell pepper, cassis and violets. Originally from the Basque country in France but displaced for a while by Merlot, Cabernet Franc then populated a considerable area of North-East Italy and now in California, New Zealand and South Africa as well as many of the smaller wine producing areas such as Hungary.
