The Journey

The nine premium vineyard parcels sourced to create The Journey are nestled along the foothills of Paarl Mountain where they thrive in the deep decomposed Granite soils. Each site has been specifically selected to provide the ideal micro-climate to suite the particular cultivar and advances a diversity of flavour components. Meticulous viticultural attention enables optimal berry ripening conditions and beautifully rich tannins at harvest. Each of the respective components were hand-picked into small lug boxes and sorted to retain only the finest berries which were destalked and lightly crushed into open top fermenters.

The wine was gravity fed into second and third fill 225 litre French Oak barrels where maturation lasted for thirteen months. The specially selected barrels were then blended and lightly filtered prior to bottling.

Pump-overs were performed three to four times per day and ferment lasted a week. Thereafter the free run wine was drawn off and the skins pressed separately.

Ridgeback Wines is situated in the northern part of the picturesque town of Paarl in the Western Cape, on the northern slopes of the magnificent Paarl mountain. The farm extends over an area of 65 hectares. Retaining the rich heritage of the countryside’s proteas and fynbos, which flourish in the region, is a priority that we are deeply and continuously committed to. Our vineyards are amongst the finest in the Cape, and our winery, which overlooks a small dam, is home to an abundance of water fowl which add to the beauty and peaceful ambience of this tranquil environment. A total of 35 hectares are currently under vine with the potential to increase the capacity further. In order to enable our winemaker to produce our exciting array of blends and single varietal wines, the farm has planted a wide variety of different cultivars.
