Merlot

The name is thought to derive from the french for blackbird, Merle, in reference to the dark blue colour. There are two main styles of making Merlot perhaps most easily distinguished as being either old world or new world. The old world style tends to be more traditional and favoured in areas such as Bordeaux. The grapes are harvested earlier to maintain acidity and they tend to have moderate alcohol levels with fresh fruit flavours and leafy vegetal notes. A more international style which is practiced in newer wine making regions emphasizes late harvesting for physiological ripeness and the creation of full- bodied wines high in alcohol, with lush velvety tannins and intense plum and blackberry fruit flavours.
