The 2023 Brookdale Estate Chenin Blanc Old Vine presents a complex aromatic profile with notes of ripe citrus, fresh honey, orchard apples, and pears, accented by bay leaf and lemon-buchu highlights. The palate is concentrated yet fresh, featuring a core of apple, pear, and lime wrapped in silky ribbons of golden citrus. Roasted nuts and a line of cream underpin the flavor profile, leading to a stony, vibrant finish that echoes with citrus.

Grapes were hand-picked at eight different stages to achieve optimal ripeness and balance. The fruit was pre-cooled and gently whole-bunch pressed before undergoing spontaneous fermentation and 100% malolactic fermentation to enhance elegance and complexity. The wine was matured for 11 months in 500L French oak barrels, followed by 11 months on the lees in 2000L Austrian oak foudres. After bottling, it was aged for an additional four months before release.

The grapes are sourced from a single block of Chenin Blanc vines planted in 1985 at Brookdale Estate in Paarl, South Africa. The vineyard is situated on decomposed shale and granite soils, contributing to the wine's mineral character. The 2023 growing season featured a dry and warmer winter, good vegetative growth, beneficial rainfall before véraison, and a cool, wet ripening period, allowing for optimal grape development.

Situated in a tranquil valley under the Klein Drakenstein mountains, Brookdale is surrounded by a world rich with life and beauty. Brookdale extends over 80 hectares with 27 planted to vine and the remainder left to revert to its natural habitat. Since the Rudd family began their stewardship of Brookdale, all alien vegetation has been cleared, valleys have been re-planted with 3600 indigenous trees and mountain slopes re-seeded with wild Cape fynbos and flowers. Bird and animal life are as rich and abundant. Every season brings different moods, different hues and different lives.
