The 2024 Brookdale Estate Mason Road GSM opens with a sappy abundance of redcurrants, pomegranates, and cherries, threaded through with an energizing line of sumac spice and dried sage. Whole-bunch juiciness is lightly held by a silken sketch of tannic grip. Forestberries and wildberries radiate from the core, dripping in plums and a soupçon of cherry confit. The mouthwatering acidity refreshes the palate as it tails towards an appetizing dry finish brushed with savoury herbs.

Each variety was harvested separately at varying stages. Grenache and Syrah underwent whole-bunch fermentation, while Cinsault and Mourvèdre were crushed and destemmed. Each batch fermented separately in open-top fermenters with natural yeast. A short post-fermentation maceration occurred before pressing and transferring to 500L and 300L barrels for malolactic fermentation. The wine spent an additional 8 months in barrel before final blending and bottling.

Grapes are sourced from vineyards located at the foot of the Du Toitskloof Pass in Paarl, South Africa. The vineyards are planted in granite-rich soils with clay and quartz, offering high water retention properties essential during the warm summer months. Vines are situated between 220 and 330 meters above sea level, exposed to strong winds that naturally reduce yields and provide a cooling influence in Paarl's warm, dry climate. The estate practices sustainable farming, utilizing natural predators instead of pesticides, and all vines are hand-harvested.

Situated in a tranquil valley under the Klein Drakenstein mountains, Brookdale is surrounded by a world rich with life and beauty. Brookdale extends over 80 hectares with 27 planted to vine and the remainder left to revert to its natural habitat. Since the Rudd family began their stewardship of Brookdale, all alien vegetation has been cleared, valleys have been re-planted with 3600 indigenous trees and mountain slopes re-seeded with wild Cape fynbos and flowers. Bird and animal life are as rich and abundant. Every season brings different moods, different hues and different lives.
