Carignan
Initially the most common vine planted in France until it was overtaken by Merlot at the end of the 20th century. Nowadays this varietal is found commonly in Catalonia where it is known as Samsó and in other areas of Spain such as Rioja. Carignan is tricky to cultivate sucessfully and pretty tricky to vinify as well. The wines produced are generally high in tannin and acidity but the vines produce almost four times as much as Cabernet Sauvignon vines of the same quality. Carignan vines produce better fruit with age and on infertile soils with desireable flavours that mask the naturally high tannin and acidity. Browse our Carignan wine selection online and order the right wine for you.
