Groot Phesantekraal
The boutique indoor wine-tasting venue finds itself welcoming guests on arrival. The new addition to the old stables is adjacent, and allows for through fare, to the restaurant. Many visitors prefer the informal outdoor tastings which take place on the grassy terrace. Young and old gather to enjoy delectable cheese and charcuterie platters while sipping their wine and enjoying the views across the vineyards and farmlands. Here and there a farm dog lolls in the shade while plump hens and chicks potter around in pursuit of a grub or two, adding a distinctly bucolic touch to the tranquil atmosphere. The farm is situated on the north-east side of Durbanville where the sea breeze from the icy Atlantic meets the dry heat of the interior. Blessed with its favourable location, good climate and fertile soil, the farm produces wines of superior quality and singular character. In 2005 the first Cabernet was bottled, followed shortly by Phizante Kraal Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. The first Pinotage will be bottled in 2016. The family does not believe in mass production, preferring to produce a limited number of bottles per year.
Description
This perfume driven Chenin blanc has intense tropical aromas extending from guava, pear, black currant to citrussy notes ranging from grapefruit to lemon. The wine also has flintiness to it with nuances of jasmine. The palate is voluptuous with a smooth tropical finish.
Food Pairing
The fresh and delicate nuances of wet stone and zesty citrus pair beautifully with seasonal salads, giving the sense of a year-round summer. A crispy, crumbed chicken salad would be a firm favourite, but grilled line fish with a squeeze of lime or a creamy sweet corn risotto would also pair well.
