Groot Phesantekraal
The boutique indoor wine-tasting venue finds itself welcoming guests on arrival. The new addition to the old stables is adjacent, and allows for through fare, to the restaurant. Many visitors prefer the informal outdoor tastings which take place on the grassy terrace. Young and old gather to enjoy delectable cheese and charcuterie platters while sipping their wine and enjoying the views across the vineyards and farmlands. Here and there a farm dog lolls in the shade while plump hens and chicks potter around in pursuit of a grub or two, adding a distinctly bucolic touch to the tranquil atmosphere. The farm is situated on the north-east side of Durbanville where the sea breeze from the icy Atlantic meets the dry heat of the interior. Blessed with its favourable location, good climate and fertile soil, the farm produces wines of superior quality and singular character. In 2005 the first Cabernet was bottled, followed shortly by Phizante Kraal Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. The first Pinotage will be bottled in 2016. The family does not believe in mass production, preferring to produce a limited number of bottles per year.
Description
The 2024 Anna de Koning opens with vibrant aromas of unripe pineapple, white pear, honeysuckle, and dried grass. The palate balances richness with elegance, showcasing cool-climate intensity. A striking minerality, almost saline, adds depth to the dense texture, while the wine’s refreshing acidity and long, lingering finish leave a lasting impression.
Food Pairing
Pairs beautifully with grilled seafood, roast chicken, creamy pasta dishes and soft cheeses. The wine's texture and freshness also complement shellfish, Mediterranean cuisine and dishes featuring fresh herbs.
