A slightly richer colour in comparison to previous vintages. The aromatics are layered with ripe wild berries, cherry tobacco, and savoury cherry tomatoes. The palate also shows robust and intense but still vibrant and elegant flavours, which is in line with the character of Pinot Noir. The wine finishes with a lovely coating and savoury flavour and a refreshing balanced acidity.

Single vineyard – The Waterford range is well known for terroir specific wines. In this case, the Pinot Noir is carefully sourced from a single vineyard in Elgin, the best-suited terroir for the growth of Pinot Noir, with a slightly cooler climate than Stellenbosch. Once the grapes are harvested, they are transported to Waterford Estate for vinification. A very natural approach is followed in order to best express the characteristics of the surroundings of the vineyards. When compared to previous vintages, the 2017 Pinot Noir vintage has a modern edge. The drought meant that the winemaking team had more control over the growth and ripening of the vineyards, helping them to produce a fresher wine.

Waterford Estate is situated in the Blaauwklippen Valley on the rolling slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in the well-known Stellenbosch region. Waterford Estate prides themselves in making Fine Wine from carefully selected grapes. Winemaker, Mark Le Roux and viticulturist, David van Schalkwyk both believe a Fine Wine displays the character of its cultivar and a true sense of place. A Fine Wine should reflect the length on the palate, has a complexity of flavours, internal harmony between aromatics and the palate, and balance between its essential components.
