Viognier

The Viognier grapes were destemmed and left overnight for extended skin contact before pressing to enhance aromatic intensity and mouthfeel. The juice was barrel fermented and matured for nine months in 100% French oak, allowing for gentle integration of oak texture with the wine’s natural fruit richness. The blend also includes 11% Sauvignon Blanc, contributing freshness and lift.

The grapes are sourced from 7- to 20-year-old vines planted in the Elim wine ward, Africa’s southernmost vineyard region, exposed to constant cooling Atlantic winds. The rocky, mineral-rich soils contribute to the wine’s fresh acidity and chalky texture. The 2024 growing season began with heavy storms and flooding over Heritage Weekend, damaging early-budding varieties, though Viognier was largely spared due to later budbreak. Dry easterly winds from November limited mildew pressure, while February brought extreme heat and wildfire threats, testing vineyard resilience. Despite these challenges, fruit quality remained high, producing ripe, flavourful grapes.

Matured for nine months in French oak barrels before bottling, the wine is intended for enjoyment in its first 3–5 years but will develop additional honeyed and nutty complexity with short- to medium-term cellaring.
