Nebbiolo
Native to the Piedmont Region "nebbio", meaning fog, is still used in the production of the DOCG wines of Barolo; Barbaresco; Roera; Gattinara and Ghemme. This red grape is fussy in nature, needing maximum sunshine and optimal climatic conditions to produce wines of calibre. Growing Nebbiolo is a matter of precision, a fine art if you will. Several similarities can be made with Pinot noir, they are both genetically unstable, both are low in colouring matter and both are extremely sensitive to the soil in which they are planted but like Pinot noir if one manages to successfully grow and produce wines from Nebbiolo you are sure to be rewarded with intensely aromatic wines of distinction. Typically you can expect roses, woodsmoke, violets and tar on the nose whilst the palate is high in tannin and acid (making it a suitable wine for ageing).
