The 2024 Mullineux Schist Roundstone Chenin Blanc opens with aromas of fresh quince, white peach and a hint of lime. On the palate, it delivers a firm, chalky texture and a generous mouthfeel, underpinned by a vibrant, zesty acidity. The cool, extended growing season preceding the 2024 harvest, without heat spikes, has resulted in a wine of finely balanced phenolic structure, freshness and depth. True to its schist-derived origin, it shows a linear precision and an ability to age gracefully over decades. Decanting is recommended in its youth to allow the wine’s aromatic and structural components to fully express themselves.

Grapes were picked in the cool of early morning and whole-bunch pressed directly to barrel. Fermentation occurred spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Following the completion of both primary and natural malolactic fermentation, the wine was left to settle without intervention. It matured on its lees in barrel for seven months, was carefully racked and blended, and bottled without filtration to preserve site expression.

The Roundstone vineyard lies on the rocky slopes of the Kasteelberg in the Swartland, with soils dominated by schist. These old bush vines grow in challenging conditions that limit vigor naturally, resulting in smaller clusters and a higher skin-to-juice ratio. This contributes to the wine’s enhanced structure, depth and texture. The site benefits from a pronounced diurnal temperature range, preserving acidity while developing full flavor ripeness. Sustainable farming practices focus on soil health and balanced vine growth. The 2024 grapes were hand-harvested between 7 and 8 February at a yield of 5 tons per hectare (30 hl/ha).
