Montecarrubo
Montecarrubo is a boutique winery located on the remains of an ancient volcanic crater in Sicily, Italy. The estate was founded in 2005 by Peter Vinding-Diers, a renowned Danish winemaker, and his wife Susie. Montecarrubo focuses on crafting high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. The vineyards benefit from constant sea breezes and volcanic soil, which contribute to the distinct character of the wines. Montecarrubo produces a variety of wines, including blends of Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. The wines are known for their vibrant flavours and elegant profiles. The winery uses traditional methods such as hand harvesting and fermentation in cement vats, followed by aging in old Pomerol barrels. Some of their notable wines include "Il Carrubo" and "Vignolo," which have received high praise for their complexity and richness.
Description
In 2020, Sicilian winemakers achieved excellent but limited-quality yields. The Syrah vines grow on one hectare at the crater rim of an extinct volcano on a primaeval coral reef with a west-facing site. This wine features vibrant blackberry and blueberry fruit, black olives, and salty minerality, with nuances of sweet spices from the oak. On the palate, the aromas become darker, denser, and more intense, complemented by violets, citrus fruit, and liquorice, resulting in a cool, powerful, and elegant wine.
