2020 was a very dry and short season, the third year in our drought. However, the average temperatures were moderate with unusually cool evenings which resulted substantial preservation of aromatics in the wine as well as an overall healthy crop. The lower the temperatures also encouraged good moisture in the soils, thus giving intensely concentrated colour to the red wines.

After malolactic fermentation in tank, the wine was matured for 13 months in a combination of 225L and 300L French oak barrels with a small percentage (5%) being new.

The grapes were hand-picked into small lug boxes in the cool early mornings of March 2019. The grapes were then destemmed, crushed and chilled as quickly as possible. After two days of cold maceration the must was inoculated with special selected commercial yeast. Fermentation was controlled at 25°C and was completed within 2 weeks.

Lievland’s history dates back to 1715, when the original farm was granted to the ex-soldier Jurie Hanekom. Lievland lies on the western slopes of the Simonsberg mountains between Stellenbosch and Paarl, two of the most prominent wine-growing areas in the Cape. The climate, location, and soil on the slopes are conducive to the cultivation of high-quality grapes, and some of the Cape’s best-known wines are made here. Lievland is all about "the here and now", and their wines are made in a generous fruit-forward, well-extracted style.
