The 2022 Groot Phesantekraal Syrah presents a refined cool-climate expression, showcasing aromas of redcurrant and Madagascan green peppercorn. These lead into a palate layered with herbaceous undertones of dried sage and fynbos, complemented by hints of vanilla and allspice. The wine exhibits a focused, linear structure with grippy tannins and a grainy texture, culminating in a well-balanced and elegant finish.

A stylistic evolution marks this vintage, aiming for an elegant, linear profile. Fermentation included 20% whole bunches in small vessels to add complexity and texture. The wine was predominantly aged in older barrels to preserve its delicate character, with 20% new oak—crafted from convection and water-bent staves—imparting subtle elegance. The oak regimen comprised 92% French and 8% American oak.

The Syrah grapes are sourced from vines planted in 1998, oriented north–south to optimize sunlight exposure. The vineyard's Malmesbury shale and clay soils, combined with moderate vine growth and low yields, contribute to the intensity and complexity of the fruit. Leaf removal during veraison enhances color development and tannin structure, reflecting the meticulous viticultural practices employed.

With a focus on limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Pinotage, the estate produces characterful South African wines shaped by its north-eastern Durbanville site.
