This Sauvignon Blanc has a pale green and gold hue, and presents enticing notes of lime zest, lemon peel and grapefruit. Flavours of nettle, green fig leaf and a dash of green pepper can be expected on the nose. One will experience a crisp, focussed finish, with a lingering gooseberry and a faint herbal edge.

The grapes were picked in the cool early hours of the morning before being destemmed into tank for 6-hours on skin contact. Thereafter, they were lightly pressed. The grape juice underwent constant mixing for 1 week on the grape lees before being racked and allowed to ferment naturally in stainless steel. Post fermentation, maturation took place in stainless steel and neutral 500L French oak barrels.

The grapes for the DMZ Sauvignon Blanc are grown on DeMorgenzon’ s South facing slopes. Weathered granite soils and cooling ocean breezes create the ideal conditions for this sensitive grape variety. Another wet winter was followed by a moderate and dry Spring resulting in an even budburst, which meant our vines weren’t at risk to early season disease pressure. We experienced a moderate summer with a few intermittent heat spikes, which meant careful canopy management was necessary to protect the bunches from sunburn. South-Easterly coastal breezes helped to maintain coolness in the vineyards during this time.

DeMorgenzon, ‘the morning sun,’ was so named as it is the first part of the Stellenboschkloof valley to see the sun because of its high altitude and aspects. We cover the top southern and eastern slopes of Ribbokkop, overlooking the pinnacle of Kanonkop from where a cannon was fired to alert the farms in the region that a ship had put into Table Bay. The first road from Cape Town to Stellenbosch ran through the Stellenbosch Kloof.
