Welgegund Mixed Red Case

The Grenache Noir and Cinsault cultivars were each harvested at optimal ripeness and fermented separately. The Grenache Noir was whole bunch fermented in an open stainless-steel tank and the wine finished fermentation on the skins and was pressed when dry. A portion of the Cinsault grapes went to open fermenters, mostly whole clusters with stalks intact. The grapes were cold soaked for 72 hours and inoculated with a Rhône yeast strain. Another portion was placed in open 500 litre barrels and naturally fermented. The different components were aged separately.

A classic blend of Grenache Noir and Cinsault. Both cultivars are from low yielding, dry land vineyards and are ideally suited to their terroir resulting in a wine with concentrated colour and intense, yet fresh flavours.

A Rhône style blend of Syrah, Cinsault and Grenache Noir, the best fruit from each vineyard was selected and all cultivars were picked at optimum ripeness and fermented separately. The Syrah and Grenache Noir were fermented in open fermenters. The Cinsault was fermented in new French oak barrels, making for early wood integration. Most of the fruit was kept intact with whole bunch fermentation the norm.

A Rhône style blend, all cultivars are from low yielding, dry land vines resulting in concentrated colours and intense fruit flavours.

50% of the wine was wooded and matured in barrels for 16 months. The wine was blended and bottled, unfiltered, in September 2022.

This vineyard is closest to the farm shed so picking is fast and efficient. The fruit was harvested by hand at first light, and cool grapes were delivered to the winery. A portion of the grapes went to open fermenters, mostly whole clusters with stalks intact. These grapes were cold soaked for 72 hours and inoculated with a Rhône yeast strain. A second portion was placed in open 500l barrels and naturally fermented. The different components were aged separately and then optimally blended.

The Certified Heritage Vineyard that produces our Cinsault grapes was planted in 1974. It is a dryland, bush vine and low yielding vineyard that produces exceptional fruit. The South West facing vineyard has ancient decomposed granite soil, that adds to the minerality in the wine. The vines are packed with hay bales at their feet to retain moisture and as a natural way of keeping weeds at bay.

The wine was then aged for 12 months before being bottled, unfiltered, in August 2023.
