Waterford Estate

Lovely aromatics of delicate violets, dark plum fruits and licorice notes. Layered into the aromatics, there are subtle notes of earthiness and leather spice, brought in by the Mourvedre component. The palate follows the aromatics of the nose with similar violet and earthy spice notes. The wine shows generosity for a vintage known for more elegant and finely textured wines. The tannins present are soft and granular with a fruit forward finish due to the use of strictly older barrels for ageing.

Grapes are sourced from vineyards which are grown in the Stellenbosch region. However, from the 2007 vintage, almost all the fruit comes off Waterford Estate. The average age of the vineyards is 20 years old, which makes them well established vineyards. Low winter rainfall and odd warm days during winter. Once the season progressed, moderate to cool and windless conditions were experienced. The result was perfect for flowering and fruit set, leading to high crop potentials. From November onwards, warm berg wind conditions were experienced throughout, creating stressful ripening conditions. Apart from being a warm vintage the wines show good freshness and elegance.

Waterford Estate is situated in the Blaauwklippen Valley on the rolling slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in the well-known Stellenbosch region. Waterford Estate prides themselves in making Fine Wine from carefully selected grapes. Winemaker, Mark Le Roux and viticulturist, David van Schalkwyk both believe a Fine Wine displays the character of its cultivar and a true sense of place. A Fine Wine should reflect the length on the palate, has a complexity of flavours, internal harmony between aromatics and the palate, and balance between its essential components.
