Waterford Estate

Many of the varietals planted on Waterford Estate were inspired by the soils and environment. The rocky slopes behind the cellar known as Stone Ridge are hot, well-drained, and challenging - perfect for the Mediterranean origin of the varietal, Sangiovese. The wine offers bright red cherry fruit, tomato leaves, fresh thyme, tobacco spice, and a very characteristic freshness on the finish.

A small vineyard planted on Waterford Estate on the Sandstone rocky slopes called Stone Ridge. Another year of severe drought conditions. Low winter rainfall and odd warm days during winter. Once the season got going, moderate to cool and windless conditions were experienced - perfect for flowering and fruit set leading to high crop potentials. From November onwards, warm berg wind conditions were experienced throughout, creating stressful ripening conditions. Positive results with early picking dates bring about wines with lower alcohol content and ironically good freshness.

Waterford Estate

Waterford Estate is situated in the Blaauwklippen Valley on the rolling slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in the well-known Stellenbosch region. Waterford Estate prides themselves in making Fine Wine from carefully selected grapes. Winemaker, Mark Le Roux and viticulturist, David van Schalkwyk both believe a Fine Wine displays the character of its cultivar and a true sense of place. A Fine Wine should reflect the length on the palate, has a complexity of flavours, internal harmony between aromatics and the palate, and balance between its essential components.
