Chenin Blanc

Given some time in the bottle, this wine will pair well with rich crustaceans or some lightly spiced dishes.

Produced from a Swartland vineyard planted in 1978. These trellised vineyards are planted on a south-east facing slope and are dryland farmed. The soils are predominantly koffieklip (decomposed granite and iron-rich clay)

The late picked portion was fermented and matured in old French oak barrels for 10 months while the tank fermented portion were also matured in terracotta clay pots known as Qvevries. The Qvevri maturation takes place over 8 weeks and adds a completely different dimension to the wine.

The grapes were picked at different maturity levels. The first picking was done at 22 degree balling, with the remaining balance picked late-February, with high sugar levels and some raisins on the bunches. The bunches were gently destalked and pressed. After 48 hours settling, the portion that was picked earlier was all fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and elegance.

The new age of the Swartland commenced in 1997 when Charles Back stumbled across an old Tobacco farm Klein Amoskuil. Bewildered by the quality of grapes in a region better known for its wheat and rolling fynbos hills the potential was obvious so Charles set forth to acquire the farm and study its soils and extreme climate. Hence Spice Route Winery was born. Spice Route hand-crafted wines have been brought from the Swartland to the Spice Route Destination in Paarl to be enjoyed by all. Enjoy wine tasting in a rustic underground tasting room or outside under the pergola whilst enjoying the panoramic views of Table Mountain and the Simonsberg Mountain range.
