Vibrant, deep dark in colour. The nose shows complex aromas of dark berries and raspberries with underlying pencil shavings. The palate is elegant and complex with fine structured tannins. This is a wine built to last. Decanting would be beneficial for early drinking.

The Grapes are specifically sourced from south-west facing slopes of some of the coolest sites in Stellenbosch. These vineyards are also influenced by southerly breezes during the summer months which have a beneficial effect. Trellised vineyards planted in decomposed granite soils from the Bottelary Hills and Jonkershoek valley. Grapes were harvested between 24.5°B and 25.5°B with a total acid of 6.8 – 7.1 g/l and a pH of 3.4-3.6

Notes of violets, black berries, sour cherries and lavender, followed by a warming white pepper seam, mixed with some intense herbs. The palate has plums and cherry intensity, wrapped with soft tannins and ending with a spicy, flinty finish.

Hand pick at 24 Balling. Fermented in a 10 ton open-top concrete fermenter. The fermentation took about 10 days with 2 punch downs a day. The grapes were then gentle pressed at around 4 Balling to compensate for the remaining sugars in the whole cluster. Fermentation finished inside stainless steel tanks. After fermentation the wine went to barrels. Finished Malolactic. Fermentation inside barrels and was then racked and returned to barrels to age for a further 12 months.

The vines are rooted in deep red Hutton soils on north-facing slopes, catching the southerly breezes of summer and the frontal winds that punish the Cape from the north in winter. Cool growing conditions on exposed aspects, as well as the practise of dryland farming, sees the fruit develop slowly, drawing maximum variety expression on the vine. The result is tight bunches of small berries, ideal for making wines of structure, elegance and refinement.

Colour: Deep, saturated dark ruby colour. Bouquet: Wondrous graphite and cedar element which seamlessly incorporates every other component – brambles, spiced black cherries, blueberries, plums, origanum, thyme, fresh walnuts and a beautiful floral element of violets and pansies. Taste: The velvety tannins produce ripples of sappy freshness and bring texture and context to the fruit; sleek, supple and sinuous. This opulent wine befits its royal name and has all the attributes of greatness. Deceptively easy to drink now but will grow in stature and complexity over the next ten years.

The 2023 growing season in the Western Cape was defined by a cool, wet winter and a moderate summer, creating a "tale of two harvests." While early-ripening varieties thrived, late-season rains posed challenges for Cabernet Sauvignon, requiring rigorous sorting and selection to ensure only pristine fruit was used. Grown on the granite-rich slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, the vines benefit from excellent drainage and altitude, which helped mitigate the wet conditions and preserved the grapes' natural acidity and concentrated flavour profile.
