Orpheus & The Raven
“The answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe and Everything is 42” – Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. In their search for answers to the great questions of life, Orpheus and the Raven’s eyes were opened by the light of the present. But the curious pair knew that beyond the light, the universe had more to offer. “True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing, Orpheus,” said the Raven. “Then the answer to the ultimate question is obviously 42!” replied Orpheus in delight.
Description
The first alluring characteristic of a young Pinotage is its colour. Dark-toned, the Orpheus & The Raven No.7 Pinotage is poured like liquid black current, filling the glass with a dark purple enlivened with red and blue. An obvious energy about the wine comes to rest in a vibrant purple pansy rim, inviting you to taste. Perfectly pitched, an aroma of crushed boysenberry adds a sweet floral note, followed by the density of dark plum. Flamboyant aromas of baked nectarine, black cherries and dark chocolate add to its intensity that calculably follows through with a velvety texture and understated earthiness. A bright touch of fennel and mint adds brilliance to the broad fruit, cooling its opulence with a savoury gloss. Albeit dry, a sophisticated balance between fruit sweetness and an arresting acidity taming its feral youth, ensures a delicious and mouth-filling experience. The judicious use of oak, adds clove and pepper spice, tucking in the fruit with fine-grained tannins. With the same bright fruit announcing itself on the palate, the structure of the wine is lined with subtle flavours of liquorice, tobacco and the textured pith of young blueberries. As you near the end of the glass, the initial depth of colour now dances with lighter shades of burgundy. Yet, its elegant persistance and length of flavour beckons for a second glass. The wine concludes with its initial berry burst and assertive texture.
