The 2023 Mullineux Schist Roundstone Syrah opens with aromas of dark fruits layered with Bergamot orange, fragrant African violets and a touch of nutmeg. On the palate, it is led by silky, schist-derived tannins, providing both structure and finesse. The wine’s depth, perfume and texture are a direct expression of the rocky, schist-rich terroir of Roundstone, and the ideal weather conditions of the 2023 vintage have enhanced its concentration and aromatic complexity. Served at 16 to 18 °C, the wine benefits from decanting within its first decade to allow the perfume and structure to fully integrate.

Harvested in the cool morning, the 100% whole-bunch grapes were foot-crushed into 500-litre barrels. Fermentation occurred spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, with only gentle hand plunging to keep the cap wet, ensuring delicate extraction. After four weeks on skins, the wine was racked and pressed back to the same open-top barrels to complete tannin development and allow the perfume to emerge. No fining or filtration was applied before bottling.

The Schist Syrah is sourced from vineyards planted on the slopes of Kasteelberg at Mullineux’s Roundstone estate in the Swartland. The schist-based soils and rocky terrain limit vine vigor, producing small clusters with a high skin-to-juice ratio, resulting in concentrated flavors, firmer tannins and enhanced texture. The dryland, organically farmed vines have adapted to the arid Swartland climate, and in 2023 they yielded 4.3 tons per hectare (26 hl/ha) from grapes harvested on 14 and 15 February.
