Moya Meaker
Set in a striking amphitheatre formed by the Hottentots-Holland, Groenland and Kogelberg Mountains, the Moya Meaker vineyard – Dijon 667 and 777 heritage clones, planted at a higher density to encourage competition between the vines – is situated on an impressive ridge of ancient Bokkeveld shales. Combined with the cool ocean winds sweeping in off the nearby Atlantic Ocean, this high-altitude location leads to a large diurnal shift between daytime and night-time temperatures. The result? Pinot Noir with bright acidity and higher concentration. The wine is named in honour of former beauty queen Moya Meaker – the mother of David’s South African-born wife, Genevieve Curl – and the Moya Meaker Pinot Noir shows precisely why Elgin’s terroir is ideally suited to this iconic Burgundian grape.
Description
A deeply fragrant, complex bouquet of rose petals, purple flowers, and autumn leaves are followed by layers of kirsch cherries, black plum, and a feather-light dusting of spice. Pure, cool and light-footed, reminiscent of its mist-shrouded Elgin origins, the palate is both as delicate and as robust as a ribbon of silk, wrapped around a taut core of crunchy red cherries and cranberries. Powdery tannins that build and dissolve complement its fresh, fruity nature. Running right through, rapier quick, the acidity is long and vital, grounded by notes of white mushroom and the nostalgic pull of wintery earth on the finish.
Food Pairing
Roast Pork with herbs and fennel or rack of venison- served medium.
