Meerlust Red is produced from estate-grown grapes sourced from four distinctive terroirs within the Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The vineyard locations offer a variety of soil types, including granite and rocky greywacke with shale, which contribute to the wine's complexity and character. The region's cooling maritime influence also plays a significant role in the slow, even ripening of the grapes.

The 2020 vintage is a blend of 32% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Petit Verdot. Each variety was harvested and fermented separately, followed by malolactic fermentation in a mix of 300-liter barrels and large Foudres. The wine underwent an initial aging period of eight months in oak, after which the different components were blended. It then spent an additional eight months in barrels to achieve harmony before bottling​.

Meerlust is a historic Stellenbosch wine estate with eight generations of family winemaking dating back to 1756. Best known for its flagship Rubicon Bordeaux-style blend, the estate also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with vineyards shaped by the cooling influence of nearby False Bay.
