The Meerlust Red 2020 displays a youthful, deep garnet color. The nose is characterized by aromas of red fruits combined with warm spices, complemented by subtle oak nuances. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with flavors of fresh red fruits and soft, rounded tannins. The wine's intensity and balance make it both vibrant and elegant.

The 2020 vintage is a blend of 32% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Petit Verdot. Each variety was harvested and fermented separately, followed by malolactic fermentation in a mix of 300-liter barrels and large Foudres. The wine underwent an initial aging period of eight months in oak, after which the different components were blended. It then spent an additional eight months in barrels to achieve harmony before bottling.

Meerlust Red is produced from estate-grown grapes sourced from four distinctive terroirs within the Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The vineyard locations offer a variety of soil types, including granite and rocky greywacke with shale, which contribute to the wine's complexity and character. The region's cooling maritime influence also plays a significant role in the slow, even ripening of the grapes.
