This wine is produced from low-yielding vineyards located in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, a cool-climate region near Walker Bay, South Africa. The soils are predominantly stony and clay-rich, derived from shale, which contributes to the wine's structure and minerality. The 2023 growing season was particularly cool, which allowed for extended ripening and resulted in grapes with concentrated flavors and good natural acidity.

The 2023 Pinot Noir was fermented using traditional methods and aged for 10 months in 228-liter French oak barrels, with a combination of new and seasoned barrels (31% first fill, 31% second fill, 30% third fill, and 8% fourth fill). This aging process helps to integrate oak flavors subtly, enhancing the complexity without overpowering the delicate fruit and earthy notes characteristic of this varietal.

Hamilton Russell Vineyards – one of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa and one of the closest to the sea – pioneered viticulture and winemaking in the beautiful cool maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. The Estate specialises in producing highly individual terroir driven Pinot noir and Chardonnay which are widely regarded as the best in South Africa and among the finest in the New World.
