Works well with sweet chocolate or fruit-based desserts, as it does with more savoury dishes like a cheese platter, foie gras or even creamy poultry dishes and even sushi.

The vines are 38 & 20 year old unirrigated bush vines that are planted in deep sandy soils. At an altitude of 520m above sea level, the vineyards experience a warm climate with cooling evening winds.

The fermentation process is stopped by filtration when the wine reaches an alcohol level of approximately 10%. Hooiwijn is matured in seasoned 500l French oak barrels for 6 months before being bottled.

Grapes are harvested on six dates and left on straw mats for 3 weeks to dry. This allows sugars and acids to concentrate, and flavours to fully develop. Grapes are destemmed and gently pressed before being transferred into a barrel for fermentation.

Donkiesbaai on the West Coast of South Africa has been the vacation home to the Engelbrecht family for four generations. The grapes for this wine come from the small region of Piekenierskloof. The complexity of this wine comes from the unique Piekenierskloof climate which allows us to produce an elegant yet approachable wine.
