A hidden garden vineyard deep in the Stellenbosch Kloof, with sweeping views across False Bay to Cape Town, lies DeMorgenzon - a name derived from Dutch origin for “the morning sun.” From its hilltop manor, this prestigious and graceful family estate is home to Wendy and Hylton Appelbaum. Classical music drifts through the garden vineyards. The earth has music for those who listen. Viticulturally, DeMorgenzon has predominantly south-facing slopes create a cooler microclimate in an otherwise warm region. This allows for the production of finely poised, ethereal Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay, as well as sophisticated, highly aromatic Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. In keeping with their vinous philosophy, the estate is farmed regeneratively, fostering biodiversity and soil vitality to create a balanced, living ecosystem in the vineyards.

DMZ Chenin Blanc 2025

Chenin Blanc from Stellenbosch, South Africa

This vintage promises a vibrant stone fruit profile, with notes of citrus, green apple and hints of tropical fruit along with a subtly integrated oak backing. The wine carries beautifully on the palate, showing apricot, ripe apple notes with structure and minerality.

Sourced exclusively from DeMorgenzon’s own Chenin Blanc vineyards. Southerly and South-Easterly aspect vines overlooking False Bay are managed for optimal exposure to gentle morning sunshine. Granatic soils result in grapes with excellent natural acidity and flavour concentration, a trait further enhanced by our intentionally low yields. An unusually wet winter was followed by a cool Spring resulting in delayed budburst of about 2-3 weeks, compared to the previous season. The delay in budburst meant our vines weren’t at risk to early season disease pressure. We experienced a moderate summer with a few intermittent heat spikes, which meant careful canopy management was necessary to protect the bunches from sunburn.

DMZ Chardonnay 2025

The 2025 vintage is one of excitement as the fruit quality and growing season were optimal. On the nose one can expected green apple, yellow-peach and ripe pear, while being overlaid by subtle white blossom floral notes and gentle oak spice. On the palate one will experience a fruit core of pear, white peach and soft citrus flavours. Due to our intergrated barrel aging on lees, a generous, yet classy mid palate can be expected. This is highlighted by a persistent citrus peel acidity and flint complexity.

The vines used to produce our DMZ Chardonnay are selected from premium sites on DeMorgenzon, at elevations ranging between 100 to 300 meters above sea level. Close proximity to the ocean provides a beneficial cooling effect. Weathered granite and sandstone soils contribute minerality and natural freshness. A moderate start to winter was soon followed late winter rains, helping to replenish soils mosisture levels. Spring was cool and dry, which resulted in low disease pressure and healthy canopies with steady shoot development. After great fruit set, we experienced grapes full of flavour while being perfectly balanced by natural acidity.

DMZ Sauvignon Blanc 2025

Sauvignon Blanc from Stellenbosch, South Africa

This Sauvignon Blanc has a pale green and gold hue, and presents enticing notes of lime zest, lemon peel and grapefruit. Flavours of nettle, green fig leaf and a dash of green pepper can be expected on the nose. One will experience a crisp, focussed finish, with a lingering gooseberry and a faint herbal edge.

The grapes were picked in the cool early hours of the morning before being destemmed into tank for 6-hours on skin contact. Thereafter, they were lightly pressed. The grape juice underwent constant mixing for 1 week on the grape lees before being racked and allowed to ferment naturally in stainless steel. Post fermentation, maturation took place in stainless steel and neutral 500L French oak barrels.

The grapes for the DMZ Sauvignon Blanc are grown on DeMorgenzon’ s South facing slopes. Weathered granite soils and cooling ocean breezes create the ideal conditions for this sensitive grape variety. Another wet winter was followed by a moderate and dry Spring resulting in an even budburst, which meant our vines weren’t at risk to early season disease pressure. We experienced a moderate summer with a few intermittent heat spikes, which meant careful canopy management was necessary to protect the bunches from sunburn. South-Easterly coastal breezes helped to maintain coolness in the vineyards during this time.

DMZ Grenache Noir 2023

Spice and mulled red fruit enhance a bright and elegant nose, showcasing the wine's purity of fruit and depth of aroma. The palate is soft and appealing, with enough structure to provide a firm yet silky finish.

These vineyards are situated on the farm DeMorgenzon in the Stellenbosch Kloof. Soils are mostly weathered granite which gives the resultant wines a natural exuberance and youthful vigour. The trellised vineyards are managed to ensure natural high acidity and full flavour concentration. Grenache vineyards are planted on warmer sites with poorer soils with high clay percentages. A mild but wet winter ensured optimal soil conditions moving into the growing season. A relatively cool spring, interspersed with some rain, led to a delayed bud break and in some isolated instances uneven flowering. Warm weather in January helped alleviate any early season unevenness.

DMZ Cabernet Sauvignon 2024

Cabernet Sauvignon from Stellenbosch, South Africa

The DMZ Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 opens with lifted aromatics of cassis, black cherry, and crushed blackberry, layered with graphite, cedar, and dried fynbos. Tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, and violets eminate with time. The palate highlights structure and elegance, with fine-grained tannins framing a core of ripe black fruit. This wine hallmarks great approachability, but will reward ageing for up to 7-8 years.

Sourced entirely from two estate vineyard blocks from DeMorgenzon in the Stellenbosch Kloof. Soils are a combination of weathered granite and koffie klip, which gives the resultant wines their length, density and concentration. Planted in 2011 across four different clones, these grapes are grown at 150m above sea level in a combination of South and North facing orientations. The 2024 growing season was marked by a cool, late spring, with steady moderate temperatures in summer, resulting in delayed veraison. Even budburst resulted in a consistent crop load, with a the actual harvest occurring slightly lately than usual. Moderate yields and small, thick-skinned berries led to great concentration and acidity.

DMZ Syrah 2023

Syrah/Shiraz from Stellenbosch, South Africa

Deep, purple core. Rich berry fruit aromas with lots of ripe, red plum and whiffs of white pepper. Some floral notes in the background, including violets, lavender and spring blossoms. The palate displays dark fruit flavours, revealing white pepper, cinnamon, clove and vanilla spice. Gentle oak integration bodes well for a long, graceful bottle maturation of this wine.

These vineyards are situated on the farm DeMorgenzon in the Stellenbosch Kloof. Soils are mostly weathered granite which gives the resultant wines a natural exuberance and youthful vigour. Planted in 2004 the trellised vineyard is managed to ensure natural high acidity and full flavour concentration. The yield was 8 tons per hectare. A cold, wet winter preceding the 2023 growing season resulted in delayed budburst and a similar delayed harvest. A prolonged cool vintage allowed for the development of an intense Rotundon flavour profile in our grapes, more commonly experienced as white pepper and spice.
