Castell’in Villa
Castell'in Villa, nestled within its medieval village, boasts a rich history dating back to its integration into the Municipality of Siena in 1176. Despite enduring sieges from Florence, it persevered, evidenced by landmarks like the San Cristoforo Church and the commanding tower. In 1968, Principessa Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa and her husband purchased the estate, commencing extensive restoration and transitioning to exclusive use of Sangiovese grapes. Today, it stands as a blend of historical charm and modern functionality, with Gazzara showcasing the estate's commitment to hospitality. Literary echoes of Tuscany's beauty further enrich its cultural significance.
Description
If a broader appreciation for authenticity existed, we would encounter an increased number of Chianti Classico wines akin to the Castell’in Villa. While many contemporary Chianti wines are enjoyable, they lack the distinctiveness and genuine expression of terroir that Castell’in Villa's exemplifies. Their unwavering commitment to traditional Tuscan Sangiovese sets them apart, vividly conveying a sense of place that is both unmistakable and compelling. Medium garnet-red with hints of pink and brick orange at the rim, this Chianti Classico parades bright aromas of blackberries, raspberries and other brambly fruits mixed with leather, tar, brown spices, smoke, and cedar. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, approachable with flavours that mirror the aromas and an intriguing, long-lasting finish.
Food Pairing
Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico needs to be on the table with food, as the “cocktail hour” will not do it justice: Serving it at 16°C in Burgundy stems next to a grilled ribeye will sublimate its characteristics. Chicken with Porcini gravy and Polenta is another great match.
