Clean aromas of Asian pear, white honey, blossom and crushed chalk. Textured and detailed, the palate has a floaty feel, like club soda. Young quince, apples and melon abound, curving along a line of salted butterscotch to a deeper shade of waxy honeycomb. On the mid-palate the sensation of peaches and cream is run through with a lifted, lemony acidity as the wine crests into a citrus-toned finish.

A blend of Grenache Blanc / Piquepoul Blanc / Roussanne / Marsanne. The grapes were picked at different stages. The fruit was pre-cooled and whole bunch pressed before spontaneous fermentation took place. The wine was barrel fermented and aged in old 500L French oak barrels. A portion of the Grenache was whole bunch fermented for added texture and complexity. The components went through 80% malolactic fermentation.

The 2022 vintage will be remembered for a cool season before harvest, followed by a sudden temperature spike from January. Good vineyard practices were followed, and canopies were managed well, which delivered exceptional grape analyses and wine quality. Temperatures rose sharply during early January, causing sunburn on exposed bunches. The hot weather in January also accelerated the early cultivars’ ripening dates, although we harvested more than a week later than in the previous year. Frequent high temperatures during February further contributed to harvest dates shifting sooner and harvesting returned to normal timing by the end of February. We didn’t experience any crop losses nor any downy mildew and powdery mildew infections.

Since the Rudd family began their stewardship of Brookdale, all alien vegetation has been cleared, valleys have been re-planted with 3600 indigenous trees and mountain slopes re-seeded with wild Cape fynbos and flowers. Bird and animal life are as rich and abundant. Every season brings different moods, different hues and different lives.
