Boekenhoutskloof
Boekenhoutskloof was established in 1776. Located in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley the farm’s name means “ravine of the Boekenhout” (pronounced Book-n-Howed). Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for furniture making. In 1993 the farm and homestead was bought and restored and a new vineyard planting programme was established that now includes Syrah Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc Grenache Semillon and Viognier.
Description
"Boekenhoutskloof has always made impressive, age-worthy Semillons, but Gottfried Mocke has taken the 2020 to another level of complexity. Using grapes from three old parcels planted in 1902, 1936, and 1942, with the largest component from the legendary La Colline vineyard, this includes 2% Muscat d'Alexandrie and some field-blended Semillon Gris. Fermented in two-thirds new wood, with the rest seeing concrete eggs and amphoras, it's one of the greatest ever Cape whites. Stony, flinty, and layered, with wax, lemongrass, and nutmeg flavours and subtle struck match reduction. Wow! 2022-30." – Tim Atkin MW South Africa Report 2022 The Boekenhoutskloof Semillon 2020 displays a pale straw colour with greenish tints. The nose is aromatic and complex, offering inviting aromas of citrus blossom, lime zest, and white peach, complemented by notes of honeydew melon, lanolin, and hints of fresh herbs. Subtle nuances of beeswax and almonds add depth. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a creamy texture and vibrant acidity, showcasing flavours of lemon curd, ripe pear, and a touch of spice. The finish is long and elegant, with a lingering minerality and a hint of toasted oak.
Food Pairing
The Boekenhoutskloof Semillon 2020 pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes due to its vibrant acidity and layered complexity. It is an excellent match for seafood such as grilled prawns, seared scallops, and pan-fried fish, where its fresh citrus notes complement the flavors of the sea. It also pairs well with poultry dishes, like roast chicken with herbs or duck à l'orange, where its richness can handle more robust flavors. For a vegetarian pairing, consider serving it with a creamy vegetable risotto, a goat cheese tart, or roasted butternut squash with sage. Its versatility also extends to Asian cuisine, such as Thai green curry or sushi.
