Macan Clasico

Soil, climate and vine. Each of these three factors play a key role in the personality and prestige of Rioja wines. Currently, Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia owns 92 hectares of vineyard. All are located on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria, north of the Ebro River, distributed between the municipalities of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida, Ábalos and Elvillar. They are plots of small size, in high terraces on poor soils of clay-limestone. The predominant variety is the Tempranillo grape, the only one used to make Macán and Macán Clásico. The climate is mild, with an Atlantic character and influences of Mediterranean and continental currents.

Its elaboration takes place in stainless steel tanks, with a part of malolactic fermentation in oak, and a barrel ageing that ranges between 12 and 14 months depending on the characteristics of the vintage.

Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia was born in 2004 as a result of the union of Tempos Vega Sicilia and the Compagnie Vinicole Barón Edmond de Rothschild. Both companies share the idea of producing great wines in La Rioja, a unique, singular and inimitable wine region. After a period of five years studying terroirs and acquiring vineyards, the project takes shape in 2009: the first vintage of our two wines, Macán and Macán Clásico. The final launch of the brand occurs in 2013, with the release of the first bottles on the market. The last milestone is the construction of the winery, in the town of Samaniego, in operation since 2016.
