The Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2024 has a pale straw colour with a slight green hue. On the nose, it offers vibrant aromas of stone fruits such as peach and apricot, along with notes of green apple, pear, and a hint of citrus zest. There are also subtle floral and honeyed undertones, adding complexity. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with flavours of ripe quince, white peach, and a touch of lemon. The lively acidity balances the ripe fruit, giving the wine a refreshing, crisp character. The finish is clean and minerally, with a slight nutty nuance from lees contact.

This Chenin Blanc is versatile and pairs well with a variety of dishes. It is an excellent match for seafood such as oysters, grilled prawns, and pan-seared fish. It also complements white meats like chicken and pork, especially when prepared with lemon or herb-based sauces. The wine’s acidity and texture make it suitable for rich, creamy dishes like pasta carbonara or mushroom risotto, as well as spicy Asian cuisine. Soft cheeses such as brie and goat cheese also pair nicely.

The grapes for this Chenin Blanc are sourced from old bush vines, some of which are over 30 years old, in the Swartland region. These bush vines are dry-farmed, meaning they rely on natural rainfall, which encourages deep root systems and leads to concentrated flavors in the grapes. The soils are predominantly decomposed granite, which helps with drainage and contributes to the wine’s minerality. Sustainable farming practices are employed, focusing on the health of the vineyard ecosystem and minimal intervention to allow the natural character of the vines to shine through.

After hand-harvesting, the grapes undergo whole-bunch pressing to gently extract the juice. The juice is then fermented using natural yeasts in a combination of concrete tanks and old oak barrels. This fermentation method helps preserve the freshness and fruit purity while adding subtle complexity and texture. The wine is aged on its lees for several months, with occasional stirring (batonnage) to enhance the mouthfeel and integrate flavors. This process contributes to the wine's creamy texture and adds depth.

AA Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein farm in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. 28ha of old bushvines grow in the Siebritskloof part of the Paardeberg mountain. The property is owned by the baie dynamic and good looking cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst. They are originally from Constantia. Their grandfather was the farm manager of Groot Constantia for 46 years. Their fathers were born there and farmed together in Constantia, during the days when people still ate fresh vegetables and Hanepoot grapes, drank Cinsault and there were a lot less traffic lights and hippies still had a presence. Together these two have restored a neglected cellar on the farm that was last used in the 1930′s to make natural wines in the traditional manner.
