Elim, Cape Agulhas, At the southernmost tip of Africa, where two oceans meet and conditions are rarely predictable, Strandveld Vineyards proudly announces the release of The Navigator 2023, a wine shaped by a challenging season, steady hands, and the quiet reward of patience.
The 2023 vintage will be remembered as a test of resilience. Early summer brought unseasonal rainfall in both December and February, increasing disease pressure and demanding constant attention in the vineyard. Each day required careful decision-making, balancing risk with instinct.
Yet, in true Strandveld fashion, the vineyards endured.
Grenache, one of the key components of The Navigator, responded particularly well to the cooler conditions, benefiting from an extended ripening period that allowed the fruit to develop depth, balance, and complexity.
In the cellar, the philosophy remained one of minimal intervention and thoughtful craftsmanship. Small parcels were handled individually, some co-fermented in open-top fermenters, others gently vinified in stainless steel, before extended maturation in French oak allowed the wine to evolve naturally.
The result is a wine that reflects both place and season.
The Navigator 2023 reveals layers of dark chocolate and sun-ripened cherry, underscored by notes of cigar box and Turkish delight. A distinct coastal freshness carries through the palate, with fine oceanic minerality and a savoury, lingering finish marked by subtle spice and finely structured tannins.
“The Navigator has always been about finding direction in challenging conditions. The 2023 vintage embodies that spirit, navigating uncertainty and emerging with clarity and balance,” says Cellar Master Conrad.
The release has already been recognised on the international stage, earning a Double Gold award at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge, affirming the quality and consistency of this flagship blend. The Navigator represents the heart of Strandveld Vineyards wines that speak of origin, shaped by the cool maritime climate and ancient soils of Cape Agulhas. Navigating the ever-changing weather patterns and terroir of the tip of Africa.
