In 1985, a particularly wet vintage left the estate dissatisfied with the concentration and structure required for Rubicon. Rather than release a wine that did not meet the estate’s benchmark, the blend was bottled simply as “Red”. The same decision followed in 1990, 2002, 2011 and again in 2019 - moments where quality dictated a different path.

Following an extensive vineyard rejuvenation programme that saw 25 hectares replanted across the estate, Meerlust Red has now become a permanent part of the portfolio. Produced from younger vineyards that will eventually contribute to future Rubicon vintages, alongside select parcels not chosen for the flagship blend in a given year, the wine represents a true second expression of the estate.

From the 2022 vintage, the label now clearly carries the name Meerlust Estate Red, reinforcing its origin on this historic maritime-influenced Stellenbosch property.

The latest release has already earned 92 points from Tim Atkin MW and 92 points from Winemag, affirming the wine’s quality and its place within the estate’s red wine lineage.

Presented in a bold red presentation tin, the Estate Red also makes a striking centrepiece for the upcoming holiday tables. Eye-catching and unmistakable, the packaging draws attention before the bottle is even opened - a fitting stage for a wine that reflects both the heritage and evolving future of Meerlust.
