Introducing the Ernie Els Major Series Double Red – a wine that brings two noble reds together for the first time in the Major Series range, culminating in a single, compelling expression.
Sourced from the property situated in the renowned Golden Triangle of Stellenbosch, this inaugural 2024 vintage unites Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Both are grown on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, where warm, north-facing vineyards sit at an elevated altitude. The proximity of the Atlantic Ocean, just 15 kilometres away, lends a cooling influence that contributes to freshness, structure and longevity.
The name Double Red speaks to both the blend itself and the Major Series story: two distinguished red cultivars now joined as one. Adding further resonance, the release echoes Ernie Els’ memorable double eagle at the 2000 WGC NEC Invitational – a rare, round-defining moment that mirrors the wine’s sense of precision, momentum and achievement.
The grapes were hand-picked in the early morning and vinified block by block. Cabernet Sauvignon fermented as whole berries in Italian Nico Velo concrete tanks, with select parcels in terracotta amphorae, while Merlot fermented in open-top tanks to enhance purity and texture.
In the glass, Double Red shows a deep, opaque hue with an expressive bouquet of smoky black cherry, cassis and cedar. The palate reveals layers of red and black fruit framed by fine, sculpted tannins, lifted by bright acidity and finishing with poise and measured depth.
Sophisticated, seamless and age-worthy, Double Red is a rewarding new addition to the Major Series.
