Tomatin Distillery, nestled in the Scottish Highlands near Inverness, boasts a long and storied history since its establishment in 1897. It faced a series of operational challenges and changes, including a closure and subsequent reopening in the early 20th century, and major expansions during the 1950s and 1970s. The distillery experienced significant financial difficulties in the mid-1980s, leading to its acquisition by Japanese firms, which marked a turning point as it became the first Scottish distillery under Japanese control. Since then, Tomatin has shifted its focus from bulk production to crafting a broader range of single malts and introduced its peated line, Cù Bòcan.
The Tomatin 18 Year Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky known for its luxurious and rich profile. The whisky is matured in traditional oak casks before being transferred to first-fill Oloroso Sherry butts for its final maturation stage, which imparts rich, dried fruit flavors and a full-bodied profile.
Nose:
The whisky presents a sweet toffee and black treacle aroma upfront, accompanied by a mix of fruity and floral notes, including cherry, rosewater, and raisin. There are also hints of cinnamon spice, a slight earthy dustiness, and damp hay, with grassy notes becoming more pronounced over time.
Palate:
It offers a rich texture, featuring flavors of highland toffee creaminess, followed by bitter oak spice, sultanas, heather honey, and dark chocolate over 70% cocoa. There are also notes of tobacco adding to its complexity.
Finish:
The finish is long and dominated by oak, with nuances of hazelnut, cracked black pepper, and salt, adding a savory edge to the aftertaste.
Awards:
Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in several years, including 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2023.
