Gunpowder Proof

Pusser's 'Gunpowder Proof' is a traditional navy style rum produced at original Admiralty strength and in accordance with the Admiralty's blending recipe last used when the Royal Navy discontinued its daily ration on 31 July 1970. Prior to the invention of the hydrometer, the ship's purser shut down claims of watering down the sailors' daily tot by mixing a few grains of gunpowder to the rum to see if it would burn. If the mixture ignited, the rum was 'at proof.' If it didn't, the purser might find himself tossed to sea! Pusser's Rum Ltd. bottles, blends and distributes the original rum of the Royal Navy. The blend is made in accordance to Admiralty specifications. For over 300 years Great Britain's Royal Navy issued a daily ration to the sailors on board ship. The ration was known as the "Tot" and its issue was one of the longest unbroken traditions in the history of the sea. The rum was a special blend called 'Admiralty Rum" or "the Pusser's Rum," that term being a corruption of the word Purser (the officer responsible for the blending of the rum and distribution of the daily "Tot").
