Appearance: Deep garnet-ruby with a dense, dark core and a youthful crimson rim. Nose: Lifted red cherry, raspberry and ripe strawberry lead into blackberry and dark plum. Petit Verdot contributes violet perfume, pepper and warm spice; Carménère adds sweet, ripe dark fruit; and Tannat anchors the nose with graphite, savoury depth and quiet power. The seasoned oak remains discreetly in the background. Palate: Classically proportioned and Bordeaux-esque in shape, with layered dark fruit, vivid red berries and a finely drawn mineral line. Tannat supplies depth and structure; Petit Verdot brings perfume, spice and energy; Carménère rounds the centre with sweet fruit and broad, ripe tannin. The texture is the defining feature: opulent, soft and velvety, yet persistent, with sufficient freshness to keep the wine composed and precise. Overall: Three less conventional roads arrive at a familiar destination: a serious, harmonious and ageworthy Stellenbosch red blend. It is not a rejection of the classic model, but a wider view of what quality pedigree can be when variety, site and climate are considered together.

Pilgrim Wines

Pilgrim Wines is a unique wine company, dedicated to inspire, teach and surprise. We are a small family-owned business with a passion for wine making. Well-known Winemaker Henry Kotzé (former Morgenster and now at the iconic Mulderbosch) carefully crafts the wines for owner and Viticulturist wife Riëtte Kotzé’s Pilgrim Wines brand. We do not have our own vineyards, at the moment we source our grapes from small pockets of vineyards that we have come across in our everyday paths. These distinct parcels of land, happen to be in our home-grown Stellenbosch area and the amazing Voor Paardeberg regions. We partner with like minded ethical growers and believe in leaving nothing but footprints for the next generation. We focus on innovative methods with tried and tested cultivars, as well as experimental styles with unorthodox, unfamiliar cultivars. We like to discover the new and untried pathways in the journey of grape to bottle.
