Merwida
The Van Der Merwe family of Merwida originated from the Dordrecht region in the Netherlands. Their ancestors owned a castle next to the impressive Merwede River. “Huis Te Merwede” was built between 1307 and 1335 and it one of the oldest castle ruins in the Netherlands. It was in 1840 that Willem Petrus van der Merwe, forefather to current owners Schalk and Pierre, laid down family roots in the Breedekloof valley. On 1 January 1963, Merwida Winery opened its doors and since then this ancient floodplain in the Breedekloof has been home to the Merwida vineyards and their wines. 7 Generations of Van Der Merwe’s have farmed the lands of Merwida and owners Schalk and Pierre along with their kids are continuing to develop Merwida in dynamic and sustainable ways and laying a foundation of excellence for generations to come. Schalk and Pierre enjoy experimenting with new clones and varietals and as a result Merwida shows great diversity, with a selection of over 32 cultivars (62% white and 38% red). The vineyard blocks are carefully selected for the bottle wines to capture the essence of the magical Breedekloof terroir.
