Tolbos Tannat

Enjoy with kudu fillet in a red wine reduction with thyme and rosemary potato gratin / lamb shanks or a slow braised oxtail potjie.

Aged for 10 months in older oak ensures that the fruit stays intact and tannins aren’t dried out. Minimal SO2 was added before bottling in October 2019.

Grapes were naturally fermented – 40% wholebunch and 60% destemmed. Punched down once a day during fermentation. Tannat has naturally strong tannins. By handling grapes gently and minimaly, we ensure soft, rounded tannin expression with focus on the marvellous fruit. After fermentation, grapes are pressed lightly and put in French oak the next day.

We produce small batches of natural wines in a remote, semi-arid, high altitude region of South Africa. Lowerland is a mixed, holistic, family farm that produces a range of soil to soul products in a holistic, integrated flow. Vineyards are certified organic with Ecocert. We collaborate with winemakers who employ natural, Old World techniques such as whole bunch and natural fermentation, basket pressing, manual pump-overs, and gentle maturation in older French oak.
