The grapes for this wine are sourced from vineyards planted on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains in Stellenbosch. These vineyards benefit from high-potential soils and ideal growing conditions, including granite mother material with high clay content, and Tukulu and Oakleaf soil families. The vineyards are situated at altitudes ranging from 140 to 270 meters above sea level, with a cooling influence from the Atlantic Ocean just 15 kilometers away.

In 1999 the concept of Ernie Els Wines was born and with the help of award-winning winemaker Louis Strydom they produced the maiden 2000 vintage of Ernie Els - a 'classic' Bordeaux blend. The intention from the outset was to focus on delivering a quality product that could hold its own in the company of the world's finest wines.
