Bain's Cape Mountain is a South African brand of whisky distilled at the James Sedgwick distillery in Wellington, Western Cape. Launched in 2009, Bain's is South Africa's first whisky produced from a single grain, being made from 100% South African-grown yellow maize.
Bain's Cape Mountain Whisky delivers a light and easy-drinking experience, characterized by its creamy texture and a sweet profile that is reminiscent of a mellow Canadian whisky, yet crafted in a style akin to American bourbon due to its 100% corn base and aging in ex-bourbon casks. The whisky is noted for its sweet vanilla and maple flavors, complemented by a gentle finish that includes touches of allspice and clove, along with a surprising note of black cherry.
Nose:
Bain's Cape Mountain Whisky opens with a nose that is gently sweet, marked by notes of butterscotch, salted caramel, and a light popcorn character, akin to a young bourbon. This pleasant bouquet sets a welcoming stage for the tasting experience.
Palate:
The palate is creamy, featuring a pronounced sweetness reminiscent of vanilla custard and coconut, with undercurrents of spice that provide a warm mouthfeel. The overall flavor profile is light yet balanced, with hints of lemon and a subtle green banana note towards the end, adding complexity and a touch of fruitiness.
Finish:
The finish is somewhat short but memorable, with a returning zest of lemon and a whisper of almond. The spices linger, speaking to the quality and careful crafting of the whisky.
