The uniqueness of our pot malt stills rest in the cylindrical necks of the spirit stills. Traditionally the necks of malt stills are open. The Loch Lomond stills include special distillation trays in the necks, allowing for greater contact with the cooling alcohol vapour. This makes the process more efficient. These stills can produce alcohol up to 90% ABV where normal stills deliver the alcohol at around 70% ABV. This style of still allows for different ‘flavour notes’ to be captured and emphasised through the range of alcohol strengths that can be captured and rejected. This is much more difficult to achieve through a conventional pot still.
Loch Lomond Original Single Malt Whisky offers an engaging array of flavours and aromas that are reflective of its Highland origin and production methods. The nose is appealing, with caramel and tropical fruit notes harmonizing with toasted oak, giving it a rich and inviting aroma. This is complemented by fresh, grassy notes and a hint of peat, adding a subtle smoky character. The palate starts with green herbal and honey sweetness alongside vanilla, transitioning into flavours of cereal, bitter chocolate, and ginger, all underpinned by a delicate smokiness. The finish is short, closing with notes of pepper and lemon peel, which contribute to a clean and crisp end. This whisky showcases a good balance, making it a versatile spirit suitable for various occasions.
Nose:
The aroma is marked by a pleasing combination of caramel, tropical fruit, and toasted oak. These are complemented by a fresh greenness reminiscent of fresh-cut hay and green grass, with gentle peaty undertones and hints of roasted nuts and cereal, adding depth and complexity to the bouquet.
Palate:
On the palate, this whisky begins with green herbal notes mingled with honey sweetness and vanilla. As it unfolds, you might notice undertones of cereal, bitter chocolate, pepper, and ginger, along with delicate peat and smoke in the background. The overall profile is vibrant yet might benefit from a splash of water to soften the alcohol's heat and enhance the nutty and lemon pepper flavours.
Finish:
The finish is relatively short, ending on notes of pepper and lemon peel, which leaves a crisp and clean aftertaste.
