Kavalan is a distinguished Taiwanese whiskey that has garnered international acclaim for its exceptional quality and innovative approach. Established in 2005 by the King Car Group, the distillery is located in Yilan County, Taiwan, a region known for its pure water and fresh air. Kavalan takes its name from the indigenous people who originally inhabited the area. The distillery quickly made its mark in the whiskey world with a variety of expressions, including the Solist Vinho Barrique, which was named the World's Best Single Malt in 2015 at the World Whiskies Awards. Kavalan's whiskeys are known for their rich character and complexity, influenced by Taiwan’s warm climate which accelerates aging, giving a maturity to flavours that typically takes much longer to develop in cooler climates.
The Kavalan Distillery Select Single Malt offers a compelling sensory journey, beginning with its inviting aroma. The nose features a lively blend of orange zest and caramel, interwoven with the delicate floral notes of honeysuckle and the tropical sweetness of dried mango. As you sip, the palate bursts with a spicy sharpness that smooths into a rich tapestry of flavours, including resin, honeysuckle, and the nostalgic essence of a cigar box, complemented by citrusy orange and the sweetness of manuka honey. This complex array of flavours is further deepened by undercurrents of charred wood, black pepper, candied tangerine, and mango. The finish is short and dry, marked by undertones of cough drops, oak, and a whisper of nutmeg, leaving a lasting impression that invites another taste.
Nose:
This whisky opens with sweet and aromatic scents. The nose is characterized by a vibrant array of orange zest, caramel, and floral notes of honeysuckle, complemented by the tropical sweetness of dried mango.
Palate:
Upon tasting, Kavalan Distillery Select reveals a bold spiciness and a noticeable warmth that eases into a complex medley of flavours. It offers notes of resin, honeysuckle, and elements reminiscent of a cigar box. The fruity presence of orange, manuka honey, and deeper touches of charred wood and fresh cracked black pepper enrich the palate, alongside the sweet nuances of candied tangerine and mango.
Finish:
The finish of this whisky is short but memorable, featuring dry notes of cough drops, oak, and a hint of nutmeg, which leave a lasting impression.
