Kavalan is a distinguished Taiwanese whiskey that has garnered international acclaim for its exceptional quality and innovative approach. Established in 2005 by the King Car Group, the distillery is located in Yilan County, Taiwan, a region known for its pure water and fresh air. Kavalan takes its name from the indigenous people who originally inhabited the area. The distillery quickly made its mark in the whiskey world with a variety of expressions, including the Solist Vinho Barrique, which was named the World's Best Single Malt in 2015 at the World Whiskies Awards. Kavalan's whiskeys are known for their rich character and complexity, influenced by Taiwan’s warm climate which accelerates aging, giving a maturity to flavours that typically takes much longer to develop in cooler climates.
The Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Finish presents a rich tapestry of aromatic and flavour experiences, starting with its intense nose that prominently features port along with layers of sherry, dark berries, and tropical citrus. These fruity elements are complemented by hints of mint, sweet tobacco, and vanilla, creating a sophisticated and inviting bouquet. On the palate, it continues with a robust port influence, weaving tart and sweet fruitiness with notes of artificial coconut, almonds, and candies reminiscent of bit o'honey and gummy bears. This complex flavour profile is accented with a refreshing minty undertone. The finish of the whiskey is smooth, marked by a dryness typical of Kavalan, with lingering notes of soft malt, sweet tobacco, cinnamon, and mango. This finish rounds out a unique tasting experience that reflects both the traditional and innovative spirit of Kavalan's whiskey-making.
Nose:
The aroma is vibrant with strong port influences, complemented by underlying notes of sherry, dark berries, and tropical citrus, which add a nuanced depth. There are also hints of mint, sweet tobacco, and vanilla, alongside earthier, darker notes that create a rich bouquet.
Palate:
Initially, the port character is dominant, presenting a mix of tart and sweet fruitiness, reminiscent of grapples (grafted apples). This is layered with flavours of artificial coconut, almonds, bit o'honey candy, and gummy bears, with a slight minty freshness. The diverse and somewhat unconventional flavours make for a complex tasting experience.
Finish:
The whiskey finishes on notes of soft malt and sweet tobacco, with touches of cinnamon and mango, maintaining Kavalan's characteristic dry finish.
