The Isle of Jura Distillery, located on the Isle of Jura in the Inner Hebrides off the West Coast of Scotland, is known for its distinctive range of single malt Scotch whiskies. Founded in 1810, the distillery underwent a significant transformation in 1963 to modernize its facilities. This was driven by the need to help revive the local community by providing employment and preventing depopulation.
The whisky is initially aged in American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels and receives its finish in Oloroso Sherry casks from Jerez, Spain, which imparts additional depth and sweetness to the whisky.
Nose:
The initial aromas are gently fruity with notes of vanilla and orange, accompanied by dark chocolate and a subtle hint of cracked black pepper . The nose also picks up smokier elements with smoked apricots, toffee, and earthy malt, complemented by a light floral touch.
Palate:
It begins with a smooth taste of nectarines and ginger, then deepens to include coffee and toasted almonds. The profile is enriched by malty sweetness, a hint of spice, and a slightly earthy undertone. The complexity continues with a touch of bitter cocoa.
Finish:
The finish is moderately lasting with a blend of peat, earthy malt, and cocoa, leaving a satisfying aftertaste that fades gently.
