Spirits have been distilled at Boplaas since 1880, when the first order of potstill brandy casks were sent to Cape Town by ox wagon for delivery to London. In those days taxes could be paid with brandy. After the repeal of distilling licenses in the early 1920’s, Boplaas’ copper potstill lay dormant for almost 70 years until it was fired up again in 1989, when legislation changed. Five years later, in 1994, Boplaas released the very first estate brandy. It was baptised Boplaas 5 Year Potstill Brandy and served at the presidential inauguration banquet of Nelson Mandela.

The silky palate is introduced by enticing sweet notes of Spring blossoms on a bed of earthy juniper juiciness, balanced by a fine herbal bitterness that lingers with every sip.

Nose:

The aroma captivates with a vibrant burst of juniper berries, underlined by the bright, citrusy tang of orange peel. Subtle hints of coriander seeds weave through, adding a spicy complexity, while whispers of angelica root and cassia bark introduce a warm, earthy undertone, reminiscent of the wild landscapes of the Klein Karoo.

Palate:

A silky texture greets the tongue, unfolding into sweet spring blossoms, followed by the rich, earthy essence of juniper. This botanical harmony is perfectly balanced by a delicate herbal bitterness, enhancing the gin's depth and inviting contemplation with every sip.

Finish:

The finish leaves a lasting impression, with the fine bitterness lingering, encouraging a slow savoring of the gin's intricate flavors. The aftertaste is a gentle reminder of the gin's crafted balance between floral sweetness and botanical vigor.
